I'm Bijay Ghalley — a trekking guide from Thimphu. I lead journeys into Bhutan's wilderness so others can discover the country, and themselves.

Victory in the mountains

My name is Bijay, which means "victory." I was born in 1997 in Thimphu, where my parents migrated from southern Bhutan in search of a brighter future. Growing up in a diverse community taught me to appreciate different cultures and the value of unity.

I always wanted to truly know my country — to see beyond the textbooks and photographs. In 2021, I received a UNDP-sponsored opportunity to train as a trekking guide. It changed my life. Now, every trek is a journey of responsibility, excitement, and walking meditation.

“I don't just show you Bhutan — I invite you to feel it.”

The trek that changed me

From the Snowman Trek to the heart of Bhutan

A trail that normally takes 7 to 8 hours on the first day took us 16 hours. We left Laya at 8:00 a.m. and didn't reach Rodophu until 11:45 that night.

My guest was a woman from Dubai who dreamed of reaching Lunana — the village where Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom was filmed. We walked through darkness, snow, rain, and exhaustion. I cared for her as if she was my own sister.

We finally reached Lunana on the tenth day — a journey that normally takes five. She carried supplies from Dubai for the schoolchildren. Watching their smiles was one of the most heartwarming moments of my life.

“That is why the Snowman Trek remains my favorite trek in Bhutan. It is more than a trail — it is a journey of the mind and soul.”

— Bijay Ghalley
